Returning patient
A patient who has been to the clinic before and comes back: to continue treatment, for a check-up, a hygiene visit or a new service. Repeat visits need no ad spend and have a direct effect on LTV.

Why returning patients matter
A returning patient already knows the clinician and the clinic. You do not need advertising to bring them in, and it is easier for them to accept a treatment plan and come back. How many patients return drives LTV — what a patient brings the clinic over the whole relationship. If there are few returning patients, the clinic lives on advertising alone and has to keep buying new enquiries. Returning patients are also more likely to recommend the clinic to people they know.
How to track them and what to do
Look at the share of repeat visits in the total number of visits for a period. Separately, check how many patients with an unfinished treatment plan have come back to it. In dentistry and aesthetic medicine many services involve return visits: check-ups, hygiene appointments, maintenance procedures. If the clinic does not remind patients itself, they go wherever they were reminded.
- Once treatment is finished, nobody books the next visit or sets a reminder.
- The patient database sits in the software, but nobody works with it: there are no call lists.
- Patients with an open treatment plan are not kept on a separate list.
- Reception calls from a template without knowing what has already been done for the patient.
What helps: booking the next visit before the patient leaves the clinic, regular calls from lists, appointment confirmation and a clear rule on who contacts a patient who went quiet after the consultation, and when. This is front-desk work, not marketing, and it needs no new ad budget.
